Post-Study Work Visas: The 2026 Global Comparison Guide

Why Post-Study Work Rights Are Your Most Important Decision Factor

The decision of where to study is rarely just an academic one. For the vast majority of international students from South Asia, the post-graduation period — how long you can legally work, what employers you can work for, and whether you can stay — determines whether the entire investment pays off.

A degree from a prestigious institution means very little if you cannot legally work in that country long enough to build a career, earn back your tuition costs, and potentially build a path to permanent residency.

Post-study work visa policy is also one of the most volatile areas of immigration law — it changes with political cycles. This guide reflects the most current policy landscape as of early 2026.

Canada: The Strongest Structured Pathway

Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) remains the most structured and flexible post-study work mechanism among all major destinations. A student completing a 2-year (or longer) program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) receives a PGWP equal to the length of their program — up to 3 years.

The open work permit means you can work for any employer, change jobs freely, and work full-time without restriction. This is critical for building Canadian work experience (CWE), which is one of the strongest factors in the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

Within the PGWP period, students with Canadian work experience and a job offer can achieve permanent residency through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), or relevant Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams.

Advantages

  • PGWP duration matches program length — up to 3 years for a 2-year Master's
  • Fully open permit: any employer, any sector, no sponsorship required
  • Spousal open work permit available for PGWP holders
  • Canadian work experience (CWE) is the most valued factor in Express Entry
  • Multiple PR pathways: CEC, FSW, PNP — multiple chances if one stream is competitive

UK: Fast but Structurally Limited

The UK Graduate Route was introduced in 2021 and gives graduates of UK universities 2 years of open work (3 years for PhD graduates). It was a significant improvement over the previous Tier 4 system that forced graduates to leave immediately after studies.

However, the Graduate Route has no direct pathway to settlement. Once it expires, you must switch to a Skilled Worker visa, which requires: a licensed sponsor employer, a qualifying role on the eligible occupation list, and a minimum salary of £38,700 (as of 2024 — previously £26,200 before April 2024 uplift).

The salary threshold increase in 2024 significantly tightened the Skilled Worker route for recent graduates whose entry-level salaries may not yet meet the threshold. This has reduced the effective value of the UK's post-study pathway for students in lower-paid early-career roles.

Australia: Regional Incentives and Extended Stays

Australia's Subclass 485 Graduate visa has been strengthened in recent years with regional extensions. Graduates of regional universities (outside major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) receive an additional year on their visa — making the total up to 4 years for regional Master's graduates.

Australia also introduced the Temporary Graduate (485) stream updates in 2023 that expanded the stay for STEM graduates. The SkillSelect points-based system for PR is similar to Canada's Express Entry — Australian work experience, age, English proficiency, and qualifications all contribute to your Invitation to Apply (ITA) score.

The key challenge with Australia is the recent tightening of immigration numbers and slower processing times. PR invitation rounds have become more competitive, and students relying on occupation lists should verify that their field remains on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
